At the age of 13, Michael Moore knew what career he wanted. "I saw myself standing beneath the stars on the open bridge of a ship, guiding it through a rough sea," he says. This romanticised teenage vision steered Moore towards a 38-year career in the Royal Navy, postings to places that were sometimes glamorous and sometimes troubled, and a knighthood. It may also be apposite for his new second career - as director-general of the Institution of Mechanical Engineers.
