The world's natural resources have long been a cause of bitter disputes between environmentalists and big business. Historically, multinationals have been accused of putting the balance sheet before their wider social responsibilities. But the warring relationship between green campaigners and industry has taken on a more concilliatory tone. The appearance of John Browne, BP's group chief executive, on a Greenpeace platform a few weeks ago came as a case of role reversal that until recently would have been thought of as very unlikely.
