Early indications as to the cause of the train crash in south Cheshire last month that saw 31 people taken to hospital point to the possibility of a driver going through a danger signal. While an inquiry by accident investigators has yet to officially confirm this as the reason for the crash, it would represent a depressingly familiar scenario. The number of trains running by red signals without authorisation stands at the worrying rate of around two a day, although collisions are usually prevented by the train stopping within the overlap safety margin.
