The average car's roles range from school bus to goods wagon to status symbol, a fact the designers are now reacting to. Like a beast from Greek mythology, BMW's new X5 SAV doesn't fall easily into any one category. It's an automotive Minotaur: half man, half bull. It looks a bit like a station wagon on steroids, with the mechanical soul of a sport-utility vehicle.
