Since the publication in 1996 of the first edition of this concept book, inherently safer design (ISD) has become more widely accepted in the Chemical Process Industries. Also, in recent years, several jurisdictions have mandated consideration of ISD for certain hazardous facilities, and similar requirements have been proposed at the Federal level in the United States. Therefore, this new updated and expanded edition is a most welcome addition to process safety and loss prevention literature. This edition builds on the same philosophy as the first edition, but clarifies and enhances the concept with recent research, practitioner observations, added examples and industry methods, plus discussions of security and regulator)' issues.
