Water cooling, either by evaporation or closed loop, is an essential part of many process cooling applications. And so, in this issue of Process Cooling, we bring you a full lineup of water cooling articles. Chris Walton of Baltimore Aircoil, Jessup, Md., kicks off this issue with "Minimize Downtime by Closing the Loop," by describing the advantages of using a closed-circuit cooling tower. While effective and efficient, evaporative cooling systems like open cooling towers tend to have one disadvantage: they serve as large air scrubbers, drawing in airborne dust, dirt and pollen. Over time, the tower can introduce these contaminants to the process fluid. By contrast, as Walton notes, a system running a closed loop isolates the process fluid inside the coil of the closed-circuit cooling tower, thereby preventing that contamination.
