Design guidance provided for contaminated land

Growing pressure on land resources and greater social environmental awareness has lead to an increasing need to reclaim and recycle contaminated land. Data on the extent of contaminated land in the UK are sparse but it is widely quoted that around 100 000 ha are contaminated - comprising some 50 000 to 100 000 sites - indicating that many civil engineering schemes may be expected to encounter contamination. Civil engineers today, therefore, need sufficient understanding of the subject both to manage such projects properly and to recognize the need for expert assistance from contaminated land specialists.
