Computers have long played a role in civil engineering design. However, recent quantum leaps in computer technology and massive reductions in hardware and software prices mean that civil engineers can now use computers in almost every aspect of their work. David Leonard reports on how a major contractor, two leading international consultants and a region al utility recently explained to a well-attended Institution meeting~* how they are using computers — particularly computer networks — and discussed the benefits and problems they have experienced so far.
