One hundred years ago Glasgow became the third city in the world after London and Budapest to build an underground passenger transport system. Indeed, such was the public's excitement when Glasgow District Subway Company opened its new underground cable-traction railway in 1896 that several people were injured and the line had to be closed for five weeks. A century later, despite electrification in 1935 and modernization in the 1970s, the civil engineering aspects of the Subway remain largely unchanged and it is still one of only two such projects in the UK. This paper describes the planning, design and construction of the original scheme together with a brief review of subsequent modifications.
