The 1995 ICE membership attitudes survey showed that few members know what the ICE technical boards actually do. ICE vice president Gordon Millington explains their fundamental learned society role. The Institution, founded in 1818 by a group of young engineers, started its life as a body to help young engineers learn from each other and through discussion to promote the 'science and art of civil engineering'.
