Birth of the all-round construction designer

Cambridge University awards its first master's degrees in interdisciplinary design for the built environment this year. Some will go to civil engineers. Course coordinators Paul Kirby and Giles Oliver explain. In 1991 a conference sponsored by the Ove Arup Foundation was held in Cambridge to consider how new initiatives in higher education might best prepare professionals in the built environment—and thereby the construction industry— for a future of increasing competitive pressures and changing cultural agendas.
