Storebaelt eastern railway tunnel: overview

This paper describes the Storebaelt crossing with its three major constructions: the western road and rail bridge, the eastern railway tunnel and the eastern road bridge. It explains why the £4.2 billion crossing was built and how it will improve communications both within Denmark and internationally. Traffic predictions are outlined, and the main design criteria established: road and rail requirements, environmental constraints and risk acceptance criteria. Project planning organization and financial arrangements are described, with particular reference to management of the eastern railway tunnel. The paper also explains how the project will be operated and maintained in service.
