Drainage—no longer simple

Major changes in the structure of the UK water industry, combined with heightened environmental and safety concerns, technological developments and increased research over the past few years, have greatly affected the requirements and expectations of drainage. As a result it is now a far more prominent element of most construction projects. To assist civil engineers not directly involved in drainage design, this paper explains the major changes that have occurred and the effect that they have had. The main aspects considered are approvals, safety, water quantity and quality, and computer hydraulic modelling.
