BS EN ISO 9000-help or hindrance?

BS 5750 (now BS EN ISO 9000) has had a mixed reception from civil engineers since it was first published in 1979. Michael Wetton of Bristol management consultancy Allery Scotts explodes some of the myths. BS 5750—the quality assurance standard— was first published in 1979 and the first revision was issued in 1987 when it was adopted by the International Standards Organisation as ISO 9000. A revision was planned for 1992, in accordance with the ISO directive that all standards be reviewed every five years. The intention now is to conduct the revision in two phases. The first phase, which serves to provide a degree of clarification and improvement, was published as BS EN ISO 9000 in July 1994, marking the end of BS 5750. The second phase is unlikely to be finalized before the turn of the century.
