European research bonanza

The European Commission has allocated nearly £10 billion for joint venture research. Derek Hughes of the Building Research Establishment explains how and why British civil engineers should get in on the action. In 1994 the European Union (EU) launched its fourth strategic research funding initiative. Called the Fourth Framework Programme, the initiative makes available £9.6 billion for collaborative European R&D projects and supporting initiatives until 1998.
