The Effects of the Economic Situation on Living Standards in Ukraine

Contemporary social development seeks to first and foremost satisfy people's needs. The degree of satisfaction of those needs is reflected in their standard of living as well as in opportunities for their further development. This has led to a rejection of attempts to define increases in living standards as growth in material goods and services, and to an awareness that development cannot be reduced only to such traditional macroeconomic indicators as the gross domestic product (GDP) and per capita income. Contemporary principles for forming an effective socioeconomic strategy in all the democratic nations without exception explicitly prioritize human development-that is, the necessity of ensuring the development of the individual in the individual's own interests. Achieving these goals requires the creation of a favorable environment from a human development standpoint-economic, political, ecological.
