The International Energy Industry at a Crossroads

L. Gngor ev is a Candidate ot Economic Sciences, president ot the Energy and Finance Institute Foundation, and dean of the Management Faculty of International University in Moscow. V. Kriukov is a Doctor of Economic Sciences, professor, deputy director of scientific work at the Institute of Economics and Organization of Industrial Production of the Siberian Branch of the Russian Academy of Sciences, and a department chairman at the State University-Higher School of Economics. The article presents the main problems of the Russian oil and gas complex. The authors argue that the global economic and financial crisis has already led not only to a certain reduction in energy consumption but also to serious changes in the global energy sector. In the medium term the authors expect more efforts in energy savings, climate change prevention, and a deeper impact of innovation. This may require a serious adaptation of the Russian energy sector to new tendencies.
