Stefan Sagmeister would be the first to tell you that he used to play in really bad bands, realizing ultimately that "I better make a decision between music and design." Those years of struggle as a musician seem to have paid off in his archive of design for CD packaging; this year's jurors were unanimous in their enthusiasm for his design of Talking Heads' Once in a Lifetime, containing three CDs and a DVD. In Sagmeister's view, most good CD packages contain good music—though good music does not always come in good CD packages—and inventive, unexpected imagery has come to typify his studio's work in this realm.
