In the late 1980s, when I was becoming more immersed in graphic design, two contemporary centers of graphic activity galvanized my attention. One, the Netherlands, was a short distance away across the English Channel and easy to visit. The other, California, was halfway around the world, and I had been there only once, a decade earlier, when I had barely heard of graphic design.
