摘要

The eighth and contemporary stage of channel managementis one of stabilisation. Channels are being assessed for theirstability and managers are actively strengthening channelmargins to reduce “loss of land”. This approach is slowlychanging, however, with rivers being allowed the freedom tomove where infrastructure is not threatened. Knowing the fate ofhistorically mined sediments will become increasingly importantin helping to understand how this new management ethos willaffect the mobilisation of contaminants stored on the floodplain.
