A national disgrace: the decline continues in government investment in R&D

According to a report released on 6 Julyrn2018 by the Australian Bureau ofrnStatistics, the government investment inrnR&D decreased by 2% between 2014–15rnand 2016–17 (http://www.abs.gov.au/rnausstats/abs@.nsf/mf/8109.0). The ABS,rnunlike similar agencies in other OECDrncountries, only analyses these parametersrnevery two years. Presumably because ofrnresource constraints.rnDuring the 2016–17 financial year,rnexpenditure on R&D by Australianrngovernment organisations was $3279rnmillion. Commonwealth governmentrnorganisations contributed $2139 millionrn(65%), and state and territory governmentrnorganisations $1140 million (35%).rnFigure 1 shows the breakdown of thesernnumbers for the period 1992–2017.
