The writer thanks Mr. Abrahams for his interest in the paper and for the comment offered in his discussion. The discusser questions the suitability of the use of Eq. F9-4 of the AISC specification (AISC 2005) for the design of cable-suspended beams.rnThe use of an equation based on AISC Eq. F9-4 for the design of cable-suspended lifting beams is a provision of ASME BTH-1-2005 (ASME 2006, hereafter BTH-1), as cited in the paper, as well as of the current version of this standard, ASME BTH-1 -2008. The BTH-1 equation, as well as the AISC equation, applies to prismatic members. The subject of the present paper is the derivation of a method of applying this BTH-1 provision to the design of a particular type of tapered beam that is widely used in construction for lifting.
