One of the great things about Amateur Radio as a hobby is that there are so many different aspects to it. For me, it's c.w. (Morse) operating that I find most satisfying, especially when things go according to plan and I am able to get through a QSO without too much difficulty. The other thing I really enjoy is home-brewing. Put these two together and I'm in my element? But Amateur Radio isn't always a case of plain sailing! One of the things I find most challenging about c.w. is that everything needs to be as near perfect as possible - if I want to close up the shack at the end of the operating session feeling satisfied. That usually means I need a quiet, settled mind so that I don't get distracted while trying to copy incoming signals. When things aren't 'just right' even the smallest things can become a distraction; things like the clattering or clicking of the paddle or settings that shift as I concentrate on sending code as smoothly as I can.
