Using a paddle with a keyer, after properly adjusting the paddle of course, can be a real pleasure. We can take pride in sending what we think is great Morse. However, listening on the bands, there are those that do not take pride, ending up with a cacophony of joined up dots and dashes, the origin of which bear slim resemblance to proper code. For some reason, examples of this can be heard mainly on the 6m band. I have heard a figure five with seven dits, a figure four with five dits preceding the dash, a seven with four or five dits after the two dahs and so on. I did wonder at one stage whether this was deliberate, in order to add emphasis to what was being sent. After all, 6m is a challenging band and signals can disappear as fast as they appear. However, it happens even when signals are S9 for minutes on end.
