The Floods that Ravaged Much of North Dakota in 1997 also Inflicted Significant Damage at a Peaking diesel power plant in Grand Forks, forcing Minnkota Power Cooperative (MPC) to determine the quickest, most cost-effective way to return the plant to service. MPC is an association of 12 distribution cooperatives serving 33 counties in eastern North Dakota and northwestern Minnesota, including 12 municipal power systems located within the Minnkota service area. The service area covers approximately 35,000 square miles and consists of 2,850 miles of transmission lines with 20 transmission substations and 170 distribution substations. The Red River runs through the middle of MPC's territory, flowing north into Manitoba, Canada.
