摘要

When Kansas City Power & Light (KCPL) assessed future needs for trained personnel, the company discovered it faced a critical shortage of technicians and initiated an aggressive program of technical training and apprenticeships to address the problem. KPCL serves 470,000 customers in western Missouri, Kansas City, and the eastern edge of Kansas. Many key workers will soon qualify for retirement at age 57 after 30 years of service, and no one has been trained to take over their jobs. With national unemployment at all-time lows, qualified technicians for electric power generating stations were simply not available in the Kansas City area. KCPL will make a large financial and manpower commitment over the next few years to train control technicians and expects to broaden its current program to include operator and mechanic training as well.
