DOE's first test to determine if a high percentage of mercury can be removed from coal-fired power plant emissions was completed earlier this year and termed successful by the Department of Energy. DOE concedes however, the process is also expensive, with the potential to double the emission control costs now paid by the nation's electric utilities.
