MERCURY CONTROL NOW ON THE TABLE

March Madness this year wasn't confined to 65 basketball teams. The term might have also applied to the long-awaited announcement by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) of regulations to reduce the amount of mercury (Hg) emitted by U.S. coal-fired power plants. On March 15, Steve Johnson, acting EPA administrator, signed the Clean Air Mercury Rule (CAMR). In doing so, Johnson said that in combination with the recently issued Clean Air Interstate Rule (CAIR), the CAMR will reduce electric utility mercury emissions by nearly 70 percent from 1999 levels when fully implemented.
