Despite revised cost estimates that would increase the total price of two new 800 MW coal units from $2 billion to $3 billion, Duke Energy has decided they represent the best option to meet growing customer demand in combination with other capacity additions. Duke Energy Carolinas has filed supplemental testimony with the North Carolina Utilities Commission in connection with its application to build two new coal units at the Cliffside Steam Station located 60 miles west of Charlotte.
