Process Water and Coal Combustion Products: Complex and Interrelated

The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) is expected to release new effluent guidelines for steam electric generation facilities in 2012. These guidelines, together with recently proposed coal combustion product (CCP) rules and ever-tightening air emissions regulations, will change how many utilities handle and contain CCPs and manage raw water, process water and wastewater. Electric genera- tion facilities may find themselves with excess plant process water inventories, causing them to implement advanced water management strategies.
