Predictions for 2011...Or Not

As we begin 2011 there are a number of events screaming for predictions. So below are five "sure-fire" prognostications for the nuclear power industry for 2011 (and beyond). 1. The U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission issues the first combined operating license under the new Code of Federal Regulations Part 52 process. OK, so I'm not going very far out on a limb with this one, but it truly will represent a seminal moment in the U.S. nuclear power industry. When Southern Company receives the license for Vogtle Units 3 and 4 in late 2011, the "promise" of the nuclear renaissance will have finally become "reality." And while the pace of the renaissance will be substantially slower than envisioned a few years ago, the successful demonstration of the Part 52 process will herald a turning point for the industry.
