Plume Abatement

The visible plumes flowing from cooling towers can sometimes cause concerns for the tower's owner. For almost 40 years, various technologies have been created to reduce the visibility of water vapor plumes. At its coal-fired power plant in Farmington, NM, Public Service Co of New Mexico operates in a region where water rights are highly significant. For years, the organization has worked to reduce its water consumption and in 2007 decided to partner with SPX Cooling Technologies to use ClearSky on one of its towers in a Department of Energy/National Energy Technology Laboratory-supported project. Plume visibility was immediately reduced on the demonstration tower and after one year of operation, the project also achieved a double-digit reduction in water usage.
