A key tool for training new nuclear power plant personnel and for keeping existing personnel sharp is a simulator. One important improvement to the nuclear power industry has been the Nuclear Regulatory Commission's mandate following Three Mile Island that every power plant have a simulator, says Tom Kauffman, senior media relations manager for the Nuclear Energy Institute. Simulators can help design engineers find and correct seemingly trivial problems while the plant is still under construction, saving costly repairs once the unit is in service.
