To help his students imagine how various energy sources contribute to the US generation mix, Frank Clemente, professor of Energy Policy at Pennsylvania State University, encourages them to picture farm animals. Coal, at about 49% of the US generating mix, would be about the size of a Clydesdale. And wind at 1% of total generation would be about the same size as a pigeon. The goal of having wind meet 20% of US generating mix by 2020 would cut US CO2 emissions by an estimated 170 million tons. That's less than one-half of 1% of total worldwide emissions.
