Greenhouse Gas Scorecard

Greenhouse gases (GHG) are a concern to global climate change, so the authors starts with international efforts. Last December, the 15th United Nations Climate Change Conference was held in Copenhagen and by all assessments did not close with the same optimism with which it opened. On a national level, numerous competing hills to regulate GHGs are in Congress. Another development of national importance is the inclusion of CO2 provisions in recently issued power plant construction permits. On a state and regional front, several GHG-limiting programs recently have been developed. Ten Northeast states are part of the Regional Greenhouse Gas Initiative, the first program to require power plants to buy permits for CO2 emissions. No scorecard would be complete without a mention of the dark horse entry: "Climategate." The leaking of thousands of emails and files from the University of East Anglia's Climatic Research Unit raises the specter of possible academic misconduct in the field of climate change research.
