2011 Outlook for Nuclear Power

The nuclear industry could benefit from the Republican takeover as part of the clean energy legislation following the November 2 midterm elections. Today there are 104 operating reactors in the US and these reactors are operating at near record capacity, at about 92% capacity factors, and are generating a lot of electricity, said Alex Flint, Nuclear Energy Institute SVP of governmental affairs. Nuclear energy is now the center of the political spectrum of the debate on energy policy going forward. Pres Obama's 2011 budget calls for an additional $36 billion in loan guarantees to continue new nuclear build out, although it is still pending before Congress.
