Basic to the porsche mystioue is the notion that most everyone else has been doing it all wrong. Even Porsche itself was caught short when it tried to alter the formula it established in the 1930s—a flat-out sports car powered by an air-cooled rear-mounted engine with opposed pistons. That basic configuration, radical in its day, was quickly identified as the essence of a "real" Porsche, a notion that never was sidetracked, even after efforts by the company itself to convert the converts to liquid cooling and front-mounted pow-erplants, with a series of partially successful cars.
