In a clearing among the scrub pines of Washington state, a near-full-scale model of a delta-winged fighter hangs from an eight-story gantry. The engine whines and roars before reaching full throttle in a gut-rattling blast of sound, and the fighter rises vertically from the ground amid a cyclone of oven-temperature gas. In St. Louis, one of the world's most sophisticated model airplanes is taking shape inside a tightly guarded hangar. About 18 feet long, the airplane has almost no vertical tail. Instead, a steerable jet nozzle will give it agility superior to that of today's fighters.
