By any measure, the high-tech Utopian vision of a computer in every room of every home—all connected via the Internet—has a ways to go. Even in the United States, most estimates peg PC ownership at roughly 35 to 40 percent of households, and only 23 percent of U.S. homes will be online by the end of this year, according to a recent study by International Data Corp. For that to change dramatically, the price of a conventional PC will have to continue its downward plunge and sink below $500, or high-speed Internet connections must reach into homes and fundamentally redefine what a PC is and does.
