Standing on a platform just 3(1/2) miles away from the Space Shuttle Challenger launch site on January 28, 1986, Barbara Morgan was as horrified by the spectacle of the Challenger explosion and the death of its crew as anyone else. But she wasn't like anyone else. As the backup to Christa McAuliffe, onboard the Challenger as the first civilian selected to go into space through the Teacher-in-Space program, she was next in line.
