Synthesis of a methacrylate-type monomer containing C_60 unit and copolymerization with t-butyl methacrylate

Methacrylate type monomer containing C_60 unit (AEMA-C_60) was prepared and was copolymerized with t-butyl methacrylate. AEMA-C_60 was synthesized by the reaction of 4-azidophenylcarboxyethyl methacrylate with C_60. ~1H and ~13C NMR spectra revealed that AEMA-C_60 was a mixture of an azafulleroid derivative resulting from [5,6] additions and a [6,6] bridged azamethanofullerene derivative. In the case of anionic copolymerization, the copolymer contained 1.2 mol% of AEMA-C_60, and the number average molecular weight was 6000.
