A field experiment was conducted at crop research farm, Department of Agronomy, Allahabad School of Agriculture, Sam Higginbottom Institute of Agriculture, Technology & Sciences, Allahabad (U. P) It is near River Yamuna and one aim was to study the effect of various organic and inorganic sources of nitrogen on growth and yield of maize (Zea mays L.) during Rabi season in 2009. The field experiment was laid out in randomized block design with three replications. The different treatments were allocated randomly in each replications. FYM, sewage sludge and compost are used as organic source of nitrogen in sole and combination with sewage sludge while the Urea is used as inorganic source of nitrogen. The results showed that application of T- Sewage sludge 1.67t ha-1 + FYM 12 t ha'1 had a positive effect on the significantly maximum growth and yield viz., Plant height (43.88 cm at 30 DAS), dry weight (1.146, 28.71, 30.49 g at 30, 60, 90 DAS) plant'1, crop growth rate (0.2778 and 6.6520 g/m2/day at 0-30 and 30-60 DAS), relative growth rate (0.0035 and 0.1070 g/g/day at 30 and 60 DAS), grain yield (27.76 q ha-1), Stover yield (116.46 q ha' 1) and the highest treatment cost (12004.75 Rs), respectively. However, application of inorganic sources of nitrogen (RDF 120:60:60 kg NPK ha-1) gave the maximum net return (16860.00 Rs), than other application of treatments.
