ASSESSMENT OF BIOMEDICAL WASTE MANAGEMENT - A CASE STUDY OF A HOSPITAL IN IMPHAL CITY, INDIA

Biomedical waste materials create an extensive range of health and safety hazards for both patients and healthcare workers. Its segregation, collection and disposal is a concern not only for the medical but general community also. Proper and effective management of BMW is not only essential but also a public responsibility. The objectives of this study are (i) Study of the BMW management scenario such as segregation, collection, transportation, storage, treatment and disposal methods in a Private hospital, (ii) Study of the various safety measures taken by the health care workers involved in BMW Management. A waste management practice in a Private Hospital was studied in the month of October 2015. This data was collected by direct interview and observation. The study showed that 0.3 kg of waste was generated per bed per day. The hospital has got separate color coded bins in all the wards for collection of waste and segregation takes place at the source. The various BMW practices in the hospital were quite up to the standard, it was mainly due to the knowledge of health hazards by the health care workers. Thus it is concluded that to face the existing standards of BMW management, authority should motivate, encourage and support the health workers.
