The river Salandi after its origination from Meghasana hill of Similipal reserve forest passes through Hadagada dam, Bidyadharpur barrage, Agarpada town, Randia, Bhadrak municipality, Satbhauni, Dhusuri and finally meets with river Baitarani at Tinitaraf ghat before confluence with Bay of Bengal at Dhamra. The river, during its course of journey, receives biological residues, mining waste, industrial wastes, agricultural wastes, urban wastes, biomedical wastes and domestic wastes from different places. In this work, water samples from nine different monitoring stations collected during summer, rainy, post-rainy and winter seasons in the year 2015 and 2016 have been analyzed to study the physico-chemical parameters. The mean and standard deviations and water quality index (WQI) were calculated for both the years independently and the study reveals that the water quality is largely deteriorated during the year 2016 than year 2015 due to the increase of mining activities and no station comes under classA water quality in the year 2015 and all stations are of class E water quality in the year 2016. Further, the study reveals that as a whole, the river Salandi is contaminated physically, chemically and bacteriologically with respect to Cr (VI), iron, chloride and bacteria and the intensity of pollution is more in rainy and post-rainy seasons.
