Wastewater treatment system design approaches vary depending on how much is known about the wastewater's characteristics, the complexity of the wastewater, the degree of treatment required to meet applicable discharge limits and the size and complexity of the project. When wastewater characteristics are well known and similar treatment systems have been designed successfully, established design equations and concepts or models can provide suitable designs.
