Merger of Two Towns Helps to Develop the Region Further

Omaezaki and Hamaoka towns merged to create Omaezaki City on April 1, 2004. In the new city, there is Chubu Electric Power Company's Hamaoka Nuclear Power Station, with its five nuclear power plants (total capacity of 4,997 MW). Since Chubu Electric started construction of the nuclear power station at Hamaoka in 1971, the local people have co-existed with the plant as they developed their town. We talked with Mayor Shigeo Ishihara concerning the future of Omaezaki City.
