Electric Power Development Co., Ltd. (EPDC) started this May the long awaited construction of its first nuclear power plant (1,383 MW)in Ohma Town, Aomori Prefecture . The power plant is the first in the world to utilize mixed oxide fuel of uranium and plutonium for all of its nuclear fuels. EPDC (now commonly called J-POWER) was established by the Japanese government in September 1952 as a public power company to secure electricity supply in the post World War II years in Japan. It constructed hydro-power plants and fossil-fueled power plants on behalf of the private power companies, which did not have the necessary resources, and conducted the wholesale of electricity to the private companies.
