Rokkasho Reprocessing Plant To Be Completed November 2008

On July 30, Japan Nuclear Fuel Ltd. (JNFL) extended the completion date for the Rokkasho Reprocessing Plant from July to November of 2008. At the reprocessing plant, the fourth step in the final active test - a test using high level liquid waste (HLW) in the vitrification facility -was begun in November 2007, and 60 blocks of vitrified waste were produced until last December. Measures were taken concerning the instability of temperature in the molten glass, generation of the low viscosity fluid, reduction of the down flow and other phenomenon, and on July 2, 2008, tests on the molten glass were restarted. However, there was a malfunction in the flow of glass from the flow nozzle and tests were discontinued on the next day, July 3. The reasons and measures are presently being deliberated.
