Realization of 'Low-Carbon Society': Issues and Actions Taken by Electric Power Companies

The Council on Long-Term Resources and Energy Policy (Established on May 2004, Chairman: Akira Amari), made up of 100 bipartisan volunteer diet members from both Houses of Representatives and Councilors, regularly meet while the diet is in session to examine energy and environmental problems not only in Japan but worldwide to reflect their findings in the future national energy policies.rnFor the 24th meeting held by the council on March 19, Mr. Yoshihisa Morimoto, Vice Chairman of the Federation of Electric Power Companies (FEPC) was invited to give an explanation entitled "Various Issues and Action to Be Taken by Electric Companies for the Realization of a Low-Carbon Society." After this explanation, we heard from the Ministries of Environment (MOE), Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology (MEXT), and Economy, Trade and Industry (METI) about their measures against global warming. We present here a summary of the meeting, as it gives an easily understandable explanation of Japan's present energy supply issues and global warming countermeasures.
