Last month's column described the fieldwork portion of the hydrant flow test. This month, we will take the information collected in the field and prepare the flow test report. The following data was recorded during a hypothetical two-hydrant flow test: Static pressure @ test hydrant = 80 psi Flow #1 Residual press. @ test hydrant = 65 psi Number of outlets flowed 1 Pitot pressure 32 psi Flow #2 Residual pressure, test hydrant = 40 psi Number of outlets flowed 2 Pitot pressure 15 psi from each outlet. (Note: make sure a reading is taken from each outlet) Flow hydrant outlet diameters 2.5 inches All outlets have a smooth rounded edge To determine the flow in gpm from the flow hydrant we can apply the orifice flow equation.
